Yamaha YZF-R3 (2015–2017) Error Codes
How codes are shown: Shown as a number on the dashboard display.
How to read the codes
- Turn the key on. The engine warning light (check engine light) should come on for about two seconds as a self-check and then go out. It may also light while you press the starter button, which is normal.
- When the self-diagnosis system finds a fault, the engine warning light comes on and an error code number appears in the multi-function display.
- Write the code down, then look it up on this site. Yamaha advises having the bike checked as soon as possible while a code is showing, to avoid engine damage.
- If the bike falls over with the key on, the engine stops and the display shows code 30. Stand the bike up, turn the key off and back on, then start the engine.

Known issues on the YZF-R3
- US-market 2015–2016 YZF-R3s were recalled because water can get into the ignition switch and corrode it, which can make the engine stall without warning (NHTSA campaign 17V-112, Yamaha recall 990112). If your bike stalls unexpectedly, or you have just bought a used one, ask a Yamaha dealer to check whether the recall work has been done.
- The fuel gauge has its own self-check. If the gauge segments flash eight times, go dark for three seconds and repeat, the fuel gauge circuit has a fault. This is not an engine error code, but the circuit still needs checking.
- Code 46 on an R3 can come from a failed regulator/rectifier rather than just a tired battery. One owner of a Japanese-market R3 saw code 46, a stall at a junction and a starter that would not turn; a used regulator and a recharged battery fixed it, after cleaning the connector had only helped for a few days.
