Yamaha Error Code 30: Vehicle Overturned (Lean Angle Cut-Off Activated)
The lean angle sensor detected that the bike fell over with the key on, so the ECU shut the engine off as a safety measure. This is a safety feature, not a fault.
The code itself is a safety feature, not a failure. Before riding again, check the bike for damage from the fall, especially levers, brakes and fuel leaks.
Why Yamaha code 30 appears
- CommonThe bike fell or was laid over with the key on
- RareLean angle sensor loose or mounted at the wrong angle
- RareLean angle sensor or its wiring giving a false reading
What to do
Start at the top: the most likely and usually cheapest checks come first.
- The bike fell or was laid over with the key on. Stand the bike up, turn the key off, then turn it back on. The engine stays shut off until the key has been cycled, even with the bike upright. The starter will still turn, but the engine will not fire, so do not keep cranking. Once the key is cycled, code 30 clears and the engine can be started normally.
- Lean angle sensor loose or mounted at the wrong angle. If the code appears without a fall, check that the sensor is bolted firmly in its original position. A sensor that has shifted can read the bike as tipped over.
- Lean angle sensor or its wiring giving a false reading. If the sensor is mounted correctly and the code keeps returning, check its connector and wiring, then test the sensor following your model's service information.

FAQ
I picked the bike up but it still won't start. Why?
The engine cut-off stays active until you switch the key off and on again. Until then the starter spins but the engine will not run. Also check that the engine stop switch is back in the run position.
Can cranking with code 30 showing cause problems?
Yes. The engine cannot start while the cut-off is active, so cranking again and again only drains the battery. Cycle the key first, then press the starter.
How do I read code 30 from a flashing check engine light?
Many Yamaha models that flash their codes show tens as long (slow) flashes and ones as short (fast) flashes, which would make this code three long flashes with no short flashes. Patterns can differ between models, so check the information for your bike.
