Yamaha Error Code 22: Intake Air Temperature Sensor: Open or Short Circuit

The ECU has found a break or short in the intake air temperature sensor circuit, so it can no longer measure the incoming air temperature and the fuel mixture may be slightly off.

Low risk

The bike usually still runs, sometimes with hesitation or poorer economy. You can ride it carefully, but fix the wiring soon.

What causes Yamaha error code 22

  • CommonWire broken near the sensor connector
  • PossibleLoose or corroded sensor connector
  • RareFailed intake air temperature sensor

How to check and fix it

Start at the top: the most likely and usually cheapest checks come first.

  1. Wire broken near the sensor connector. Open the airbox or find the sensor (often in the airbox or intake duct) and flex the wires gently right where they enter the connector. A wire that has snapped inside its insulation will move more freely than the others.
  2. Loose or corroded sensor connector. Unplug the connector, look for corrosion or a pushed-back pin, then reconnect it until it locks.
  3. Failed intake air temperature sensor. Measure the sensor's resistance and compare it with the value for your model at the current air temperature. Sensors fail less often than their wiring, so check the wiring first.

Parts & tools you may need

  • Soldering kit
  • Heat shrink tubing
  • Digital multimeter

FAQ

Can vibration cause code 22?

Yes. Owners have found the sensor wire snapped right at the connector, where engine vibration flexes it. Supporting the wire after the repair helps stop it happening again.

How do I read code 22 from a flashing check engine light?

On models that flash the code, count two long (slow) flashes followed by two short (fast) flashes.
