Yamaha Error Code 19: Sidestand Switch Circuit Fault

The ECU has found a fault, such as a break or short, in the sidestand switch circuit, so the sidestand safety system may stop the engine as if the stand were down, even while you are riding.

High risk

The engine can cut out without warning while riding. Do not ride until the circuit has been checked and repaired.

What causes Yamaha error code 19

  • CommonFaulty sidestand switch, or damaged wiring or connector in its circuit
  • PossibleCorroded contacts inside the ignition (key) switch

How to check and fix it

Start at the top: the most likely and usually cheapest checks come first.

  1. Faulty sidestand switch, or damaged wiring or connector in its circuit. Look at the switch on the sidestand pivot for dirt, damage or a loose mounting, then follow its wire back to the connector. Check closely where the wire runs near the drive chain: on one early YZF-R25 batch Yamaha recalled bikes because this wire could rub on the chain and break. Unplug the connector, clean it and check the switch for continuity with the stand up and down.
  2. Corroded contacts inside the ignition (key) switch. If the code comes and goes, especially after washing the bike or riding in the rain, have the ignition switch checked. On a YZF-R25 that showed code 19, the dealer traced it to corrosion on the switch's internal circuit board and replaced that part.

FAQ

Is code 19 always the sidestand switch?

No. The code points to the sidestand switch circuit, but at least one owner of a YZF-R25 had code 19 caused by a corroded ignition switch. Check the switch and its wiring first, then the ignition switch.

Is code 19 linked to the YZF-R3 ignition switch recall?

Possibly. US-market 2015–2016 YZF-R3s were recalled because the ignition switch could corrode and stall the engine (NHTSA 17V-112), and Japan had a similar recall in 2017. Neither recall mentions code 19, but because the causes may be related, ask a Yamaha dealer whether the recall work has been done on your bike.

Can I just bypass the sidestand switch?

It is better not to. The switch stops the engine if you ride off with the stand down. Find and repair the fault in the circuit instead of removing the safety feature.
