Yamaha Error Code 41: Lean Angle Sensor: Open or Short Circuit
The ECU has found a wiring or sensor fault in the lean angle (tip-over) sensor circuit, and for safety it usually shuts off fuel and spark so the engine will not run.
High risk
The safety cut-off can stop the engine at any time. Do not ride until the circuit is repaired, and never bypass the sensor.
What causes Yamaha error code 41
- CommonLoose or corroded lean angle sensor connector
- CommonDamaged or modified wiring to the sensor
- PossibleFailed lean angle sensor
- RareSensor loose or mounted the wrong way after other work
How to check and fix it
Start at the top: the most likely and usually cheapest checks come first.
- Loose or corroded lean angle sensor connector. Find the sensor (its location varies by model; on the FZ6, for example, it sits near the fuse box), unplug it, clean and inspect the pins, then reconnect it firmly. Clear the code and see if it comes back.
- Damaged or modified wiring to the sensor. Check the three sensor wires for cuts, splices or wires twisted together by a previous owner. Test each one for continuity between the sensor connector and the ECU.
- Failed lean angle sensor. With the key on, measure the sensor's signal voltage with the bike upright and compare it with the value for your model, or swap in a known good sensor.
- Sensor loose or mounted the wrong way after other work. Make sure the sensor is bolted down in its original position and orientation. A sensor that hangs loose or sits upside down can confuse the ECU.

FAQ
What is the difference between code 30 and code 41?
Code 30 usually means the sensor did its job and detected that the bike fell over. Code 41 means the sensor circuit itself has a fault, such as a broken wire or bad connector.
Can I just bypass the lean angle sensor?
No. The sensor stops the engine if the bike goes down, and bypassing it removes that protection. A bypassed or cut circuit is also a known cause of code 41.
